What You Need to Do

  1. Open the Thunderbird download page using one of the links above.
  2. Click the green Download button.
  3. Open the downloaded file when the download is complete.
  4. Follow the instructions for your type of computer below.

Installation Instructions

Windows

  1. Open the Thunderbird download page.
  2. Click the green Download button.
  3. Choose Save File if prompted.
  4. Open your Downloads folder.
  5. Double-click the downloaded file, usually named Thunderbird Setup.exe.
  6. If Windows asks whether to allow the app to make changes, click Yes.
  7. When the Thunderbird Setup Wizard appears, click Next.
  8. Leave the installation type set to Standard.
  9. Click Next, then click Install.
  10. When installation is complete, ensure Launch Mozilla Thunderbird now is checked.
  11. Click Finish.

Thunderbird should now open automatically.

Mac

Download Website: https://www.thunderbird.net/download/

  1. Open the Thunderbird download page.
  2. Click the green Download button.
  3. Open the downloaded .dmg file.
  4. A window will appear showing the Thunderbird icon and the Applications folder.
  5. Drag the Thunderbird icon into the Applications folder.
  6. Wait for the copy to complete.
  7. Open the Applications folder.
  8. Double-click Thunderbird.
  9. If your Mac warns that Thunderbird was downloaded from the internet, click Open.

Thunderbird is now installed.

Setting Up Your Email Account
  1. When Thunderbird opens, enter your name.
  2. Enter your email address.
  3. Enter your email password.
  4. Click Continue.
  5. Thunderbird will usually detect the correct settings automatically.
  6. Click Done.

If Thunderbird cannot detect your email settings automatically, you may need the following information:

  • Incoming mail server (IMAP or POP)
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP)
  • Port numbers
  • SSL/TLS settings
  • Your full email address as the username
Troubleshooting
  • If the download does not begin, try another web browser.
  • If the installer will not open on Windows, right-click it and choose Run as Administrator.
  • If Thunderbird will not start, re-download the installer from the official website.
  • If your email account does not work, verify your email address, password, and mail server settings.
